Lets celebrate Irish culture!

Lets celebrate Irish culture!

Why 17 March? The date marks the saint's death. Patrick died in 461 in Saul, County Down. He is buried in the grounds of Down Cathedral in Downpatrick, County Down. When was the first parade? The first St Patrick’s Day parade actually took place in Boston in the United States in 1737. Ireland's first parade was held in Waterford in 1903. Was St Patrick Irish? No, he wasn't born here. St Patrick was thought to have originally come from either Wales or Scotland. Why do people wear green? Green is a color now synonymous with St Patrick’s Day and Irish pride but until the 19th century, the color associated with St Patrick was actually blue. Why is St Patrick associated with shamrocks? According to legend, St Patrick used the shamrock as a metaphor for the Holy Trinity when he first introduced Christianity to Ireland.

Grande Couronne - the Great Crown, more then a N... series

Grande Couronne - the Great Crown, more then a N... series

Glenfiddich Grande Couronne 26 Years is a limited and quite unique Single Malt Whisky. Glenfiddich 26 y Grande Couronne is a masterful whiskey for lovers of luxury single malt in general and of course fans of Glenfiddich whiskey in particular. The Grand Couronne has been developed to toast the good moments in life. Pure craftsmanship of the highest order and thanks to Glenfiddich aged 26 years. The basis of the character of the Glenfiddich Grande Couronne is laid by a very long maturation in American and European oak barrels, followed by a 2-year finish in ex-cognac casks (presumably Remy Martin). Aromatic and lively in scent with nice aromas of sweets and toasted oak. Silky smooth flavors immediately stand out on the palate. Sweets, notes of café crème, brown sugar and a hint of spices complement each other and lead to a long, sweet aftertaste in which oak influences can also be found. Glenfiddich Grande Couronne is presented in a beautiful box that rotates and presents the bottle in a beautiful way.

The heavily peated malt for this new dram has been created from harvests brought home from three Islay farms, by Raymond and his farming colleagues Neil Mclellan and Raymond Fletcher. The resulting rich, aromatic Port Charlotte wash was trickle distilled in our Victorian stillhouse during 2011. Moving forward we now have 19 farmers who have made the commitment to grow for us and to whom we are equally committed. This Islay barley is who we are. This is where we’re from. Nose – A whirlwind of vibrant aromas burst from the glass, an earthy tarred peat smoke announces this is Port Charlotte. lemon, peach and green grapes come from the spirit. Vanilla pods, creamed coconut and chocolate speak of the American oak maturation. The combinations of aromas intertwine and jostle for attention. some time to open allows notes of lemon drizzle cake, white chocolate and peach yoghurt to rise wrapped in a velvet blanket of light smoke. Palate – Hints of salt reinforce the coastal feel. Dry smoke, salted caramel and apple sauce. Then lemon drops, boiled sweets and ground white pepper. The smoke is light on the palate, tar and charcoal rather than medicinal phenols. Towards the finish and the light gentle spirit has an edge of floral sea breeze, marine and refreshing. The sweetness of the oak and the barley are matched beautifully by the dry peat smoke. Islay grown, the barley seems more distinct and brings through the peach and apple typical of our spirit. Finish – Tar and brine, peat smoke and salt, coconut and tobacco. Close your eyes and the smoke takes you to an Islay beach with a driftwood bonfire.

Ever seen the Maxwell house?

Ever seen the Maxwell house?

The Maxwell House Decanter was considered one of the most beautiful of its time and oddly enough it was not Jack Daniel who was responsible for designing it. That honor instead went to Lem Motlow. The origin of this decanter’s name dates back to the year 1859 when Colonel John Overton Jr. began construction on a new hotel in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Over the years, the Maxwell House Hotel became a well-known stopping point for famous people passing through the South. Lem Motlow knew of the hotel’s popularity and prestige and saw this as a business opportunity for the Distillery… To commemorate the decanter that Lem Motlow first presented to Colonel Overton, the Distillery released a half gallon replica bottle in 1971.

After Echo and the Bunnymen: The Pogues..

After Echo and the Bunnymen: The Pogues..

The Pogues is the official Irish whiskey of the legendary band. The whisky is made in Skibbereen, in the west of Cork. A blended whiskey that is sweet and intense with notes of malt and cracked nuts. The Pogues was an Irish-English folk/punk band. The band was formed in 1984 and was certainly not without controversy. Unfortunately, the head singer repeatedly lapsed into alcoholism, which led to many gigs being cancelled prematurely.

What did the bourbon say to the almonds?

What did the bourbon say to the almonds?

Am I drunk or are you nuts? Simply put, bourbon is American whiskey made from corn. Written with -ey. The corn, not nuts, gives the bourbon a sweeter taste compared to other whiskeys. This gives bourbon a smoky and caramel-rich taste. But bourbon is subject to a number of strict rules. The following points are important when you can call whiskey bourbon.  Bourbon = 5 conditions     Is made in America     Contains a minimum of 51% corn     Has no ageing minimum. For straight bourbon it is two years     Does not contain other drinks or colourings     Has an alcohol content below 80% in the second distillation of the production process. Bourbon contains 60-70% alcohol

Michel Couvreur, Made in France Whisky?

Michel Couvreur, Made in France Whisky?

Michel Couvreur had a very personal, and truly revolutionary vision of what whisky should be: more than terroir, more than the distiller’s touch, it was the maturing in oak casks that truly helped the grain spirit become whisky. From 1978 on, having settled in the French region of Burgundy, he decided to make it his life’s work and to dedicate his research to a process which he once compared to cross-fertilisation.
